The 21st Century found friends for Cottage Cemetery: Virginia Military Institute (VMI), a Committee of Cousins, and devoted Descendants and Friends.

For two years VMI alumni worked to clear the vandalized and neglected cemetery site, searching for the grave of a VMI cadet. Cadet William Carmichael fought in the Civil War Battle New Market and is buried in Cottage Cemetery.VMI inspired descendants to form the Cottage Cemetery Cousin Committee.

At their first meeting in 2007 the name “Augusta’s Historic Cottage Cemetery, Inc” was made official, and under that name, became incorporated as private non profit in the State of Georgia. The cousins who live across the southeast address restoration, preservation, history and genealogy for ancestors and descendants.

Bouquets from the cemetery to Family and Friends all across the country that make this happen. Also thanks to: National Society Colonial Dames of America, State of Georgia, Augusta Town Committee; Watson Brown Foundation; Watson Brown Junior Board, and Knox Foundation for grants received.
